In the picturesque village of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, nestled within the Saint Joseph appellation's original six communes designated back in 1956, there emerges a winery and a wine made by Bastian Jolivet that encompasses what a ‘winter white’ wine should be in my opinion. In 2014, Bastian, freshly returned from a series of enlightening internships both locally at Domaine du Monteillet in Condrieu and abroad in far-flung wine realms such as New Zealand and South Africa, embarked on a transformative journey with his father. They chose to break away from the tradition of selling their bountiful 10 hectares of grapes to the local cooperative and took the bold step of crafting their own wines.
Their wines, swiftly garnered acclaim, reaching into the heart of Paris and Parisians. Here, the prestigious Review of the Wine of France bestowed upon them the coveted Grand Prix "Discovery of the Year 2020," marking them as the finest new winemakers of the era.
Amidst his 10ha domaine, approximately one hectare is dedicated to the white grape variety Marsanne, while a minuscule quantity of Roussanne adds its unique character to the estate's portfolio. Spontaneous fermentations breathe life into the grapes, and the wines are nurtured in a harmonious blend of 228-liter barrels and 600-liter demi-muids. The artful assembly of these distinct elements takes place just before bottling, allowing the wines the time to interlace their unique qualities.
In keeping with tradition, the wines are never subjected to fining, and filtration is a gentle touch, preserving their essence. The judicious use of sulfur dioxide is kept to a minimum. The result of this meticulous craftsmanship is wines that exude a sense of remarkable depth on the palate.
