Situated in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region within the Rhône Valley, Clos de l’Oratoire des Papes takes its name from the quaint 18th-century oratory (oratoire in French) overseeing its original 49.5-acre vineyard. In 1880, ownership of this plot, planted with Syrah and featuring the small oratory dedicated to St. Mark, passed to Edouard Amouroux. By the 1920s, the Amouroux family began bottling their own Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine from this vineyard, christening it Clos de l'Oratoire des Papes. Reflecting its storied past, the wine’s label retains its distinctive design, dating back to its inception in 1926, as a homage to its rich heritage.
This Chateauneuf du Pape is produced using organic farming methods. The blend consists of 25% Grenache Blanc, 25% Bourboulenc, 25% Clairette, and 25% Roussanne grapes. With an alcohol content of 14.5%, the vines grow in limestone-rich soil fragments. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermentation takes place in vats. The wine is aged for 6 months, utilizing concrete tulip-shaped vats as barrels, with 80% of them being new.
