Domaine Francois Mikulski will always evoke strong emotions for us here at Knightsbridge. Our visit to taste these very 2021s out of barrel was eye-opening. While we’ve enjoyed these wines for some time Mikulski’s 2021s captivated us and we’ve remained big fans of the entire lineup. Their old vine Aligoté from vines planted in 1929 and priced well under $40 is one of the store’s best values out of Burgundy. Being in Meursault means that many eyes are on their white wines and deservedly so, but like so many others in the village; Coche-Dury, Roulot, Comte Lafon, the reds deserve special attention as well. Located close by to Meursault are emerging terroirs from villages like Monthelie, Saint-Romain, and Auxey-Duresses. Saint Romain has some of the highest elevations in the Cote d’Or which leads for great tension in their wines, especially their whites. Auxey-Duresses, located between Saint-Romain and Meursault makes soft and very enjoyable red wines. Both Auxey-Duresses and Saint-Romain have vineyards tucked away further back in the Combe. Monthelie, located between Volnay, Auxey-Duresses and Meursault has a unique orientation of it’s vineyards. Almost all of them face south. Les Toisieres does just that. Located at the bottom of the slope Mikulski describes this terroir despite its southern orientation as cool since it is directly at the mouth of the Combe. “We never have big color (in this wine). Le vine facile et deguste.” Translation: It is easily delicious! Indeed it was as I look back on my notes. Fresh fruits, medium bodied and a slight wild quality. Old techniques would have over extracted the grapes leaving one with harsh, green tannins. No so here.
