The Cogno family boasts a heritage spanning four generations in winemaking within Piedmont. In the early ‘90s Elvio Cogno acquired a magnificent 18th-century farmhouse atop the famed vineyard Bricco Ravera. Elvio meticulously renovated the manor, repurposed ancient granaries into wine cellars, and established his namesake winery. Over the subsequent two decades, he dedicated himself to preserving the winemaking traditions of the region. Now, Elvio has entrusted the legacy to his daughter, Nadia, and her husband, Valter Fissore, who apprenticed beside Elvio for 25 years. Upholding Elvio's mastery, the Elvio Cogno winery continues to craft refined wines while steadfastly preserving the Langhe's traditions, styles, and flavors, encapsulated within its awe-inspiring patchwork landscape and distinct grape varieties.
The Ravera vineyard, encompasses approximately five hectares within the broader zone sharing its name. Positioned at an elevation of 380 meters above sea level, these Nebbiolo vineyards face south and southeast. The soil composition is characterized by compact calcareous clay, abundant in minerals that impart a distinctive savoriness to the wine. The microclimate of the area is influenced by Alpine currents and moderated by the proximity of the Tanaro River, contributing to the wine's freshness and bestowing it with an elegant bouquet.
James Suckling: 94 Points
The fruit and depth of this wine is very pretty. With brightness and transparency. Plums, and cherries with dried flowers and spices. Medium to full body, bright fruit and acidity. A powerful finish. A fantastic 2014.
Wine Spectator: 93 Points
Pure cherry and strawberry fruit graces this delicate Barolo. Elements of licorice, tar and mineral add complexity and there is adequate structure. Still, this should be approachable early for the light weight and balance. (BS)
Wine Advocate: 92 Points
The Ravera cru of Novello is quietly growing in prestige and consistency. It is becoming one of the latest additions to an elite list of grand cru sites in the Barolo appellation. That quality is demonstrated in a difficult vintage such as this. The 2014 Barolo Ravera is a tight and polished expression with a glossy and gleaming personality. The fruit is fine-tuned and small in range, but it hits the senses with pinpoint precision. The wine shows the taut tightness of its youth and will flesh out with a few more years of cellar aging. The 2014 Barolo Ravera is just as impressive as it has been in the past. Sweet floral notes and layers of fruit are beautifully laced together. Over time, the 2014 has started to gain weight, but it is also starting to shut down in terms of its overall expressiveness. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon.
