En la Rue de Vergy is one of the best examples of a well-positioned village vineyard. It is a rare village parcel located adjacent to a Grand Cru, a distinction typically reserved for Premier Crus. En la Rue de Vergy touches three Grand Crus—Bonnes-Mares, Clos de Tart, and Clos de Lambrays. Virgile Lignier has told us on multiple occasions that you can taste an echo of the Monopole Clos de Tart Grand Cru in this wine. He believes En la Rue de Vergy should be classified as a Premier Cru.
This vineyard sits at the top of the slope, where the soil is poor, and the site is slightly cooler, influenced by both its altitude and the proximity of the forest above Morey-Saint-Denis. (Domaine Bruno Clair also makes an excellent wine from this vineyard.) Virgile’s parcel consists of vines that are 48 years old for the 2022 vintage—certainly what most would consider old vines. However, Virgile reserves the “old vine” designation for vines older than 60 years. Still, the age of these vines contributes to the structure of the wine. For us, this wine is always about freshness, tight tannins, and minerality.
Virgile Lignier took over the family’s vineyards in 1999. For generations, the family made wine but sold it to négociants. Virgile changed course, moving toward domaine bottling and thus establishing Domaine Lignier-Michelot in Morey-Saint-Denis. His wines are accessible when young but have the depth to age gracefully.
