Clos des Epeneaux is a 5.23ha monopole (single owner) of Domaine Comte Armand. It is situated at the north end of the village of Pommard, which is just south of Beaune. It is a parcel comprising portions of its two neighbors, Les Petits Epenots and Les Grands Epenots. The soil here is richer in clay and iron, vestiges of a river that once flowed over what is now the vineyard. Pebbles ensure good drainage on the gentle sloping vineyard. There is little doubt that this is one of the finest examples of Pommard.
Neal Martin: 94 Points
The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a classic, undergrowth infused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of stewed black tea emerging with time, tobacco and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, succulent and juicy with a fleshy, almost Volnay-like finish that is very appealing. This is a well crafted and comparatively approachable Pommard. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.
