Down in Santenay we see limestone as well but here the color is more grayish. In the Clos Tavannes which is at about 250-200m in elevation there is a component of oolitic limestone. Oolitic limestone forms in warm, shallow waters and is characterized by its small, roundish rocks. Widely considered the best vineyard in Santenay. Domaine de la Pousse d’Or works five acres of vines in this east-facing premier cru, enclosed by an ancient stone wall on three sides. Approximately one-third of the vineyard was planted in 1920, with the remainder planted in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1990s. In Santenay, brilliant black-cherry notes rule along with strong floral components.
