Lafarge's Bourgogne is made from a small, south-eastern facing vineyard whose Pinot Noir vines are between 40-50 years old. It drinks like a village Volnay which has earned it the moniker of a 'baby Volnay' here and in other Burgundy-centric circles. It is a wine that delivers beyond its label designation. A true glimpse of the textbook Lafarge style; elegant and pure.
One of our most anticipated stops every year is the one we make at Domaine Lafarge. In the heart of Volnay, their cellars date to the 13th century and impart a sense of history that even other venerable cellars cannot.
And then, there are the wines. They are made in a low-tech but detail oriented environment. According to Frederic, there is only about 15% new oak in the entire Domaine. Though some of the older reconditioned barrels look like they could have been subject to a thought experiment similar to “Theseus’ Paradox '' therefore making them new and increasing the percentage on site? That is a debate for another forum...It is safe to say that the wines are traditionally made and little new oak is used.
