Chateau de la Tour is the largest vineyard owner in Clos de Vougeot. Owner/Winemaker Pierre Labet has about a sizeable chunk of the vines in the heart of the clos; Quartier des Marei Bas, Dix Journaux, and Montiotes Basses. On the top near Musigny and Grands-Echezeaux there are vines in the Plants Honor. And at the bottom of the vineyard, Quatorze journaux. This gives Pierre a great 'slice' of the total terroir of the Clos allowing fro what be one of the more historically accurate examlpes of this Grand Cru. Pierre is meticulous calling the process of making each wine a 'mille feuille' of details which he oversees down to the individual staves used in each oak barrel of his. It's all in his quest for elegant pinot but be careful! Here finesse is not to be mistaken for weakness. This offering is the 'young' vine bottling with vines at a 'youthful' 65+ years of age on average.
Clos de Vougeot is an imposing and impressive vineyard to see in person. The wall that encircles its 125 acres, and makes it a true clos, was completed in 1336 some 200 years after its founding in the 1100s. Two massive structures, Château du Clos de Vougeot, and Chateau de la Tour look tiny when viewed from the opposite sides of the vineyard. Clos Vougeot’s size is a detriment some would say but, with the winemaking bar being constantly raised, we believe this Grand Cru, the largest in the Cote de Nuits, can be a good source of value. Of course, if it’s here, it is a fine example.
