Sourced from the Echézeaux Lieu-dit "Les Treux" on the southern border of Grands Echezeaux and just upslope from Clos de Vougeot. His Echézeaux typically receives 50% new oak.
Étienne Julien makes his wines as simple as possible. “This is not a place of big technology” He told us during our visit in 2017. Étienne embraces the traditional methods “Because it’s the wine I like to drink and it makes it easier for me to share.” He treats each parcel a little differently with the exception that everything is de-stemmed 100%. Étienne just does not like the impact of the “green tannins” that his experiments have yielded. “In the Rhone” he posits “it’s (green tannins) nice. But, “Pinot Noir is so fine and so complex -- to have something green on it is not nice.”
The Domaine’s history can be traced back into the 19th century with vineyard land purchased near the Domaine, in Comblachien and Nuits Saint Georges. The Domaine expanded after WWII and again in the 70’s and 80’s. Domaine Julien currently exploits about 10ha.
