En Remilly is in essence, an extension of Le Montrachet. It's on the same hill at the same altitude with the same soils as its famous neighbor but a more southerly exposure. This is one of Lamy's 'cherries.' 2.02ha planted in 1989.
Domanie Hubert Lamy was founded in 1973 though the Lamy family has an extensive vinous history going back to 1640. Olivier Lamy joined the family Domaine in 1995 and is now in charge. On our visit, Olivier greeted us, after our arrival directly out of his vineyards (Olivier has a well earned reputation for his diligent vineyard work).
Lamy’s whites are wines of incredible verticality, minerality, and freshness. But, Olivier throws us a curveball in his cellar. His Chardonnays are barrel fermented (350L & 600L)! Keeping us off balance, Olivier then threw us a knuckleball when he posited that the notoriously difficult to grow Pinot Noir is easier to grow than Chardonnay! What!? According to Olivier what makes Chardonnay so difficult to grow successfully, is a narrow 100 day window within which one has to achieve perfect ripeness. If ripeness does not happen in this window for Pinot Noir a vigneron will simply let it hang longer. According to Olivier, “One will only get extraction. One will not get better, riper wine.” if this technique is applied to Chardonnay. We can’t wait to return!
Neal Martin: 95 Points
The 2022 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru comes from two parcels at either end of the vineyard. It has a strict int- and crushed stone-scented nose that's very minerally and uncompromising. The palate is fresh, vibrant and beautifully balanced on the entry with just the right amount of acidity. It has wonderful sapidity and tension on the nish with a dab of ginger on the aftertaste. This is outstanding.
