This parcel is just under the esteemed premier cru, Les Suchots. Bunches of ripe darker red fruits. Juicy fruit flavor on the palate. The finish is lifted and floral ending with a deep red fruit component that lingers.
Despite having the address we were a little nervous about knocking on the door to Domaine Confuron Gindre. Though it's located in the heart of Vosne-Romanée, we'd never visited before. There was no marking, no plaque to designate that the door we were standing in front of was the door to a world class Domaine. On a prior trip we knocked relentlessly on the door of what we thought was the Domaine we were supposed to visit. Days later we found out we had been given the wrong address. There was also the time we visited a prominent Domaine in Chassagne-Montrachet without having an address. We did what seemed reasonable and googled the address only to show up at the Domaine's old address where we interrupted the breakfast of the grandparents. Luckily they pointed us in the right direction with a laugh. So, we were a touch apprehensive when we knocked on the door. Fortunately, we were right. Edouard Confuron, 6th generation, greeted us and welcomed us into his family's cellar.
The family's holdings are impressive and broad. Their Domaine produces wine across 66 parcels mostly in Vosne-Romanée. In the vineyards the work is practical guided by the lunar cycle. In the cellar whole clusters are used though the amount is vintage dependent. With these wines we're looking at about 20% on the village level and 25% on Les Chaumes which is also the location of their oldest vines, 100+ years. Oak is similarly tiered at about 20% new on the village parcels and 40% on Les Chaumes. Elevage is 18 months for the reds. There is no fining or filtering here.
The wines we tasted were impressive! The textures of the wines are rich without heaviness (or lack of tannins) and have a lush fruit profile that's supported by perfect acidity and alcohol levels that don't exceed 13.5% despite the vintage's warmth.
