Yorkville Cellars takes its name from another unincorporated village and is located within the Yorkville-Highlands AVA. This is all about 1hr north of Healdsburg and just south of the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County. The winery operated in an organic manner before Deborah and Edward Wallo purchased it in 1988 so it has an extensive, pioneering role as an organic producer which continues to this day. Edward and Deborah had originally planned just to have a place to raise their kids so they sold their grapes but noticed something. Those who purchased their grapes turned them into award winning wines. So, they decided to give it a go themselves. Initially they were to make a red blend in homage to the Bordeaux properties they loved to visit when they lived in Paris. Now, they do make a blend but they also discovered their monovarietal wines made excellent bottlings on their own. So, there is a proprietary red and white but each of the 8 Bordeaux varieties on site are also bottled individually as well. That’s pretty cool! Edward and Deborah joke that this winery is the one place on earth where these varieties are grown and bottled individually.
Yorkville AVA was established in 1998. It features a wide range of climactic conditions; coastal influenced cold, foggy, and rainy conditions to hot, dry, and windy days. Two dozen wineries call it home now, all are at least at 850 feet in elevation and up to 2,500 feet. Yorkville’s vineyards are between 1,000-1,200 feet in elevation. Old gravel and friable rock make up most of the AVA’s soil structure.
