This 2017 vintage from Meursault promises to be a true gem. Crafted by the highly regarded Vincent Girardin from possibly one of the best vineyards in Meursault (Les Perrières itself!).
Hand-harvested and meticulously sorted, the grapes undergo a slow extraction using a pneumatic press. Following a brief settling, the wine is transferred to French oak barrels (including 15% new barrels) for alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Extended aging on fine lees for 18 months takes place without stirring, allowing the flavors to fully develop. Finally, the wine is blended and lightly filtered before bottling according to the lunar calendar, resulting in a wine with exceptional potential. Expect aromas of citrus, white flowers, and a touch of butter, leading to a rich, dense, and elegant palate with a refreshing mineral finish. While initially austere, this wine promises to blossom into something truly explosive with age.
Wine Advocate: 94 Points
The 2017 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières is performing brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with a textbook bouquet of citrus oil, crisp green apple, Anjou pear, mandarin oil, crushed chalk and struck flint. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, it's muscular but tight-knit, with racy acids, excellent concentration and a long, mineral finish. From 65-year-old vines planted on the SO4 rootstock, Germain tells me this parcel isn't very vigorous and always gives tiny yields.
Vinous Media: 91-93 Points
Bright medium yellow. Reticent aromas of peach, apple and spices; this wine finished its malo early and appears to be going through a slightly tired phase today. Dense, sappy and salty but hard to taste, with its savory and spicy qualities currently dominating its fruit. Best today on the dusty, tactile, rising finish, where the minerality of this premier cru comes through clearly. But this wine needs more élevage to reveal its inherent class.
Burghound: 90-92 Points
More subtle though hardly invisible menthol elements can be found on the restrained nose of matchstick, mineral reduction and acacia blossom aromas. There is ample minerality suffusing the medium weight flavors that possess excellent punch on the dry and youthfully austere finish where a touch of wood influence appears.
