Vincent Girardin's 2018 Auxey-Duresses Old Vine Rouge has developed beautifully and is currently in its perfect drinking window. This 90-point village red, sourced from 45-year-old vines in the south-east facing "En Derrière le Four" vineyard, offers remarkable value and quality, showcasing notes of black fruits, red cherry, and blackberry. Bounded by Premier Cru vineyards on three sides, this wine stands out for its terroir.
Auxey Duresses has been known as a location for value and quality for some time. This wine is a unicorn but in a different sense than others. Normally, wines like this are scooped up quickly and consumed shortly thereafter so the opportunity to enjoy them with a little evolution is a rare opportunity. There's so much to like about this wine which comes in just at or below the price of many Bourgogne level bottlings.
Burghound: 87 Points
Enough wood to mention can be found on the ripe and distinctly earthy, even sauvage, aromas of various wild red and dark berries trimmed in a hint of anise. The supple, round and relatively forward lighter weight flavors possess good verve and detail while delivering acceptably length on the overtly rustic and slightly bitter cherry suffused finish. While this is sufficiently approachable to be enjoyed young, I would advise holding it for 2 to 3 years first. Drink: 2024+
