Spring Mountain Vineyard's Cabernet Sauvignon is a favorite of ours. It is also an outlier. To start, the wines are elegant and have stayed so in a region where many have extracted their wines almost to parody. Two, it's a steal at it's price point. Capable of aging decades or more, they can be in your cellar for well under the century mark. This combination, cost-effective and high quality, is very rare in the prestigious Napa Valley. It has always captured us on the occasions where we've been fortunate enough to enjoy older vintages.
Nature has blessed Spring Mountain Vineyard with varied growing conditions. Altogether there are over 135 vineyard blocks on the estate planted to Bordeaux grape varieties. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are also grown. The highest, north-facing canyons offer coolness that enhances their wines in warmer years, while the mid and lower vineyard blocks, basking in eastern and southern sun, contribute warmth and intensity, particularly in colder vintages. This intricate interplay of elements bestows NoCal native and winemaker Barrett Anderson, with an extensive palette to craft from. Searching for balance, there could be no greater source than these vineyards.
