Dating back to 1172, Volpaia holds a rich historical legacy. In 1250, it stood as a founding member of the Chianti League, a creation of the Florentine Republic, dividing communities into districts such as Castellina, Radda, and Gaiole. For almost 900 years, the entire village from which the winery takes its name has been intricately involved in wine and olive oil production. Volpaia is a bustling village where residents, directly or indirectly, contribute to the winery. Most winery employees reside within the village walls, housed in structures restored by the winery's current owners, the Stianti Mascheroni family.
The entire range of wine produced at Volpaia is impressive but it might be the entry level Chianti Classico that is the most impressive wine in their lineup for its combination of quality and price. At less than $20 per bottle the wine combines a vibrant acidity courtesy of the Sangiovese base (90%). It receives a bump of body and juiciness with a dollop of Merlot (10%). Complexity is achieved via their organically farmed vines which are up to 52 years old and no younger than 20 years.
Antonio Galloni: 92 Points
The 2021 Chianti Classico is an absolute joy. Fragrant, silky and super-expressive, the 2021 captures all the finesse of Radda. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, orange peel and mint are all beautifully delineated in a vibrant, mid-weight Chianti Classico that has so much to offer. This is a fine showing. Drink: 2025-2036.
Wine Spectator: 92 Points
A racy version, this boasts black cherry, blueberry, violet and iron flavors. A firm line of tannins works in concert with the acidity, while flashes of Mediterranean scrub peek through. Mouthwatering finish. Sangiovese and Merlot. Drink now through 2032.
