The region of Friuli in northeastern Italy proves to be an optimal location for cultivating white wine grapes, particularly the indigenous variety Ribolla Gialla. Positioned with the protection of the Alps to the north and benefiting from the Adriatic Sea's sea breeze from the south, Friuli has been recognized for its favorable grape-growing conditions since Roman times when the area was dedicated to winemaking.
Historically, Ribolla Gialla was widely planted in Friuli Venezia Giulia. Previous theories suggesting a Greek origin were debunked through DNA profiling in 2007 and 2008. The grape is now believed to be indigenous to the Friuli Collio/Goriska Brda region. Its documented history dates to a contract executed in 1289 in the Friuli region.
In terms of wine characteristics, Ribolla Gialla produces a light-bodied white wine with high acidity and floral notes. Some producers however distinctly ferment the variety with its skins, creating a more substantial “orange” style. This is not that style. The winemaking process employed by Pighin involves the careful selection of handpicked grapes at their optimal ripeness. Following harvest, these grapes undergo a gentle pressing and experience a cold-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Notably, the absence of oak aging contributes to the creation of a finished wine that serves as a pure and authentic expression of the Ribolla Gialla grape.
Pighin Winery was founded by Luigi Ercole and Fernando Pighin in 1963, as a 500-acre estate within the DOC Grave-del-Friuli zone from a prominent Friulian aristocratic family. The property's vineyard acreage, previously tended by 25 families under the former owner's management for multiple generations, became part of the Pighin legacy.
