A native Midwesterner Russell has emerged as a premier winemaker with a talent for making wines that are beyond hedonistic yet balanced. As the only winemaker to produce a perfect wine in the challenging 2011 vintage (WA) Russell's approach clearly works. We trust him to make consistently excellent wines.
Russell Bevan's "Pont" made for PerUs winery, is a classic Bordeaux-style blend consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Tench Vineyard (neighbor to Screaming Eagle and Rudd) along with Cabernet Franc and Merlot from the Sugarloaf Vineyard. The Tench Vineyard is located on Oakville's east end on the benchlands. The vineyard's iron rich soils are planted with some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world.
The Sugarloaf vineyard is unique for being so far south. It is just east of Carneros. At the time of it's planting it was thought that it would be too cool for Bordelaise varieties. Owner and visionary Bill Hill was not deterred., he went ahead and planted the grapes anyway. The success of the vineyard now is apparent. What Bill realized is that the vineyard's rocky base would serve as a mirror for the sun's light. The reflective light aids ripening and radiates warmth past sunset.
