Roberto Conterno, was excited to be able to get his hands on the historic Nervi estate in 2018. The estate is the oldest in Gattinara (1906) and stood out to Roberto in part because of its history of success but, also because of the unique terroir. Opposite to Barbaresco and Barolo, Gattinara is comprised of a unique volcanic based soil at altitude. The vineyards at Nervi combine those characteristics with traditional approach in the cellar that includes extended aging in large oak barrels.
Valferana's aspect tilts towards the west and is the cooler of the two vineyards. It's grace has been known since 1231. Molsino, known since the 15th century has a more southerly exposure. It is more powerful of the two and also considered amongst the top Gattinara vineyards.
Antonio Galloni: 97 Points
The 2019 Gattinara Molsino is a dark, brooding wine. Smoke, incense, licorice and leather open in the glass, but only with great reluctance. A wine of tremendous persistence and presence, the Molsino is so impressive in 2019. It is also embryonic and in need of cellaring. The only question is how long. Time in the glass brings out the wine's natural resonance, offering a glimpse of what will come in time.
Jeb Dunnuck: 94 Points
Coming from one of the great sites from the volcanic soils of Gattinara, the 2019 Gattinara Molssino is smoky, with a darker profile of black and red fruits and notes of black cherry, leather, and wet asphalt. This medium-bodied red offers wonderful concentration and purity, with ripe yet present tannins as well as notes of gravelly earth, cranberry, and tea leaf. It is an outstanding wine expressive of its more northern terroir to drink over the coming 15 years. (AF)
