The Sparr winery traces its origins to 1680 when it was founded by Jean Sparr in the village of Sigolsheim. Over three centuries later, successive generations of the Sparr family dedicated themselves to nurturing and expanding their estate. Pierre Sparr assumed stewardship of the winery in the early 1900s, at a mere 20 years old, exhibiting a keen business acumen that positioned him as a pioneer of estate bottling in Alsace. His guiding principle, "Invest, progress, and maintain," epitomizes the ethos of the domaine now known as "Maison Pierre Sparr Successeurs."
Invest he did especially after the ruinous effects of World War Two. Sigolsheim was the location of a German stronghold. Capturing the town was a major objective of the allies and the battle fought for the village was savage and destructive. Undeterred, he embarked on the arduous task of rebuilding the family domaine, restoring its former splendor as one of the region's preeminent estates. His sons, René and Charles, furthered this legacy by expanding and rejuvenating the estate's vineyards and cultivating trade with European and international markets. Now in its 9th generation, the winery is well positioned as a leader for the region.
Highlighted today is one of their top sites, the Schoenenbourg Vineyard. Rated as a Grand Cru it spans a steep hillside with a south and southeast orientation, nestled between the villages of Riquewihr and Zellenberg. Encompassing a sprawling expanse of 53.4 hectares (132 acres) and situated at an elevation ranging from 265 to 380 meters (869 to 1,246 feet), this historic vineyard has garnered acclaim since the 16th century.
This 2019 Riesling Schoenenbourg shows brilliantly rich with notes of ripe lemon peel, crisp apple, hints of licorice, and an abundance of minerals captivate the epicurean's olfactory journey. Notes of flint intertwine with nuances of butter and sweet peaches.
