For Jill and Steve Matthaiasson, with extensive experience in sustainable agriculture and the local food movement, founded Matthiasson Wines in 2003. They were (and are) driven by core values of purity, terroir expression, respect, responsibility, and of course, deliciousness. Their portfolio comprises classical renditions of various grape varieties, ranging from well-known ones like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon to rarer finds like this month’s Ribolla Gialla and Refosco. Characterized by deep flavors, refreshing qualities, food-friendliness, and moderate alcohol levels, their wines embody their ethos.
During a journey to Friuli, Italy in 2005, Steve's encounter with Ribolla Gialla sparked a profound reconsideration of the possibilities inherent in white wine. Accompanied by their friend and pioneering Napa winemaker George Vare, they explored the resurgence of this historic, indigenous variety among local winemakers. These artisans were fermenting the grapes in the traditional style of the area, on the skins, not unlike red wine production. The resulting wine is therefore one that shares characteristics with both red (tannin) and aged white wines (dark color, nutty flavors and aromas).
This version of Ribolla Gialla exhibits a sumptuous textural quality. Perhaps it’s a touch richer owing to the climate but it very close to those examples famous in Friuli, evoking flavors of hazelnuts, baking spices, Meyer lemon curd, and Bartlett pear, all underscored by the signature stony minerality of the grape. Recommended pairings include dishes such as pork with stewed fruit or chutney, ahi tuna sashimi, and selections of charcuterie and intense cheeses. Our very own Terry likes the intensity of “orange” wines’ aromatics with good Thai cuisine.
