Domaine Jadot's vineyard holdings are vast, and winemaker Frédéric Barnier will have something fascinating to say about each parcel, but there's no doubt about it. The Clos de Bèze is one of the portfolio's greatest wines. From very old vines, the Bèze follows vintage and is, to say the least, impactful.
Le Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze together form the rectangular block of 28.3 hectares that is the jewel in Gevrey's crown. While Clos de Bèze may be called Chambertin (but not vice versa) this is a rarity. Still, they are such a pair that Jasper Morris describes them together in Inside Burgundy. With subtle differences in slope and levels and types of topsoil, Bèze ever-so-slightly distinguishes itself out of the gate as classy and more delicate with an exceptional perfume.
Wine Advocate: 96 Points
Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru (Domaine Louis Jadot) is showing marvelously, unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of juicy cherries, cassis, blood orange, violets and rich spices, its framing of new oak already almost entirely integrated. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, multidimensional and utterly complete, with a bottomless core of cool, sappy fruit that entirely conceals its supple but abundant tannins. Immensely concentrated and strikingly structurally refined, this is a brilliant Clos de Bèze that's more classically balanced than the more overtly ripe 2015. (WK)
Vinous Media: 94-96 Points
(Jadot made 85% of a normal yield here): Bright, full red. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of cherry and raspberry enlivened by rose petal, menthol and crushed stone. Compellingly rich and dense but light on its feet; even richer and riper than the Chapelle but still with terrific inner-mouth energy and juicy definition. The intense red berry flavors are complicated by an exotic spicy/herbal element of za'atar. Even more backward than the Chapelle but the tannins are wonderfully refined and the raspberry and spice finish at least as long. (ST)
Burghound: 93-95 Points
This too displays bourgeon de cassis reduction and plenty of wood influence. More positively, there is a bit more mid-palate concentration to the more refined yet still tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that possess slightly better complexity and equally good length on the ever-so-slightly warm finale. Note well that this superb effort is also very firmly structured and is likely to age glacially over many years.
