Jonata is a cult producer of wines from its estate in the Central Coast of California’s Ballard Canyon appellation within Santa Ynez Valley. With a commitment in particular to Bordeaux varieties it is one of the leaders in the region and the state. Jonata takes it name from an 1845 land grant, the Rancho San Carlos de Jonata. The name Jonata translates to ‘tall oak’ from the Chumash Native Americans. Ballard Canyon was not particularly well thought of at the time of planting but, with dedication and conviction the team here put together a great plan that has hashed out well. One of the most interesting facts was the sandy soils of the area. Its origin is 100% Careaga Sandstone which allow for incredible drainage but also Jonata’s signature texture of softer tannins. “El Alma” is one of the more underrated wines in their portfolio. It shows Layered and complex aromatics of spicy red fruit, dusty earth and Illy beans. Sanguine and silky. A wine of dark fruit, dark chocolate and refreshingly resinous impact. Purple and reserved. Ripe strawberry, balsamic, black cherry and lavender. Essence of the alluring black and green personality of cabernet franc. Cooling, minty sensation. Firm with a strong backbone of that uniquely cabernet franc tannin and formidable black fruit. Finish is energetic with cut and tremendous structure. Fewer than 50 cases of this are made.
