Founded in the mid-19th century by Charles de Saint-Rapt, Domaine Gouffier is situated in Fontaines, a village known for its water sources in the heart of wine country, neighboring Mercurey and Rully. In the 1950s, Madeleine Gouffier expanded the estate into Mercurey. Her son, Jérôme Gouffier, a naval engineer by training, inherited the property in 1993 and focused on developing bottle sales. Since 2012, Frédéric Gueugneau, a neighbor to the Gouffier family, has been writing a new chapter for this historic Côte Chalonnaise estate, adding a winemaker's négoce operation.
The name of the vineyard, "la Charmée," originates from the old French word "Charmoie," meaning a place planted with hornbeam trees. The hornbeam is a tall tree with wood highly valued by wheelwrights for its resistance to friction and pressure, often used to make wheels and press screws. The Mercurey La Charmée is a 0.80-hectare plot of the estate, planted with Pinot Noir, facing east on loamy soil.
"Living soils give rise to wines that reflect their terroir." In response to current climate challenges, Domaine Gouffier practices responsible, sensitive, and innovative viticulture, incorporating the principles of organic farming, agroforestry, and agroecology. The grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, and partially destemmed. Alcoholic fermentations are carried out with indigenous yeasts, and sulfiting occurs only after malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 14 months, partly in oak barrels and partly in terracotta jars, and is unfiltered and unfined.
