These “damned mountains” provide the most chiseled, vibrant and deeply profound of Cotat’s stupendous Sancerre wines. Smoke, ripe pears, lemon zest.
Cotat's Sancerres are highly coveted in the Loire Valley, owed in part to his prime terroirs in the finest vineyards. You see Chavignol, located in the western part of the Sancerre appellation, features a unique type of soil known as "terres blanches." This area boasts a chalk plateau similar to that of Chablis, but coupled with clay and limestone soils. The prominent vineyards—'Monts Damnés,' 'Grande Côte,' and 'Les Culs de Beaujeu'—are perched on steep hillsides with minimal topsoil. 'Caillottes' is from a flatter portion just under the slope where 'Monts Damnés' is located.
The resulting wines have exceptional character and complexity. A combination of old vines, late harvests, and oak fermentation results in textured wines that beautifully interact with their terroir's innate minerality. These unique and limited wines offer immediate delight yet are equally fit for long-term cellaring, lasting for decades or more.
