The Sonoma Coast AVA can be rather misleading. One might think that the appellation covers the area of Sonoma that hugs the coastal range out near Petaluma. While that area is included in the AVA there's also overlap with more inland AVAs that pre-date it like the Russian River Valley, Green Valley, Chalk Hill, and Carneros! There's a long back story as to why this is but suffice to say, this AVA covers a lot of territory. Frankly, it's a bit of a cluster and has led people to form an unofficial AVA called the "True Sonoma Coast" which are wineries very near the Pacific coast. Flowers is one of those wineries whose vineyards are not more than a couple miles off the coast. Their proximity to the ocean and high elevation vineyards lead to wines with "distinctive minerality and fresh natural acidity."
