it’s not often you find a wine in this price point from Napa Valley at this quality that boasts a prime single vineyard source. In this case, the vineyard is a part of the Ghost Block winery called “Block House.” The vineyard takes its name from the design of George C. Yount’s original home which was built on this site and of block house design. Block House, located on the Yountville Cross Road near Highway 29 by the Yountville Hills. The vineyard boasts a diverse array of 14 grape varietals but the Chockablock is a straight forward left bank-style Bordeaux style blend: 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, and 15% Malbec. This vineyard enjoys the cooling influence of San Pablo Bay's winds, with rows oriented in a Northeast-Southwest direction.
What makes this wine so attractive and fun is its drinkability. It’s fresh, forward and fleshy fruit is carried by a smooth texture of medium body with proper varietal characteristics. It is sturdy without being overdone. While featuring fruit, it is not a bomb. Structure is there too but it’s not too tight and there will be no waiting for any oak to integrate in this wine because it’s elevage is entirely in neutral barrels. It all comes together so beautifully in your glass.
