Élevée Winegrowers is the work of Chicago natives Tom and France Fitzpatrick. Situated in the Willamette Valley's Dundee Hills AVA on a 4 acre vineyard that belonged to Archery Summit until Tom and France purchased it in 2008. The high density (3,000 vines/acre) south facing Élevée Vineyard was planted on Jory soils in 1998 by the legendary Gary Andrus. He used four different clones of Pinot Noir; 777, 115, 667 and Pommard.
Tom and France chose this location and the name Élevée because in Oregon, the best sites are elevated on slopes. They sit at 540 ft in elevation. This helps in a few different ways. It allows cold air to drain downhill into the valleys below while simultaneously 'pushing' the warmer air up towards the vineyard. It also aids in the angle at which the sun's rays hit the hillside vineyard, in effect amplifying the intensity of the sun's rays. The slope also provides beneficial drainage character during rains.
Tom and France believe "that a wine is shaped equally by one's growing and winemaking choices. In fact, we feel they are one and the same. Consequently, at the heart of Élevée is this concept of 'winegrower' ... one part 'winemaker', one part 'grower'. The two are inextricably linked." We agree.
