The origins of Domaine de Baronarques can be traced back to the 17th century when the estate was established. However, it wasn't until the 19th century that the vineyards gained recognition for their quality wines. In 1998, the property was purchased by the Rothschild family, famous for their ownership of Château Lafite Rothschild in Bordeaux. They embarked on a significant revitalization project, modernizing the winemaking facilities and implementing sustainable viticultural practices. Domaine de Baronarques is renowned for its red wines, which exhibit depth, elegance, and a harmonious balance between fruit, tannins, and acidity. The wines often display notes of dark berries, cassis, spice, and subtle oak influences. They have gained critical acclaim both in France and internationally, solidifying the estate's reputation as one of the leading producers in the Languedoc-Roussillon region.
One of the key factors contributing to the exceptional quality of Domaine de Baronarques wines is the unique terroir of the region. The vineyards are situated at an elevation of 350 meters (1,150 feet) on the slopes of the Pyrenees Mountains. The combination of altitude, diverse soil types, and a Mediterranean climate creates an ideal environment for cultivating grapes.
The estate spans over 100 hectares (247 acres), with approximately 50 hectares (123 acres) dedicated to vineyards. The primary grape varieties grown here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Malbec. In terms of winemaking techniques, Domaine de Baronarques combines traditional methods with modern ones. Grapes are hand-harvested. Sorting allows them to select only the finest fruit. After destemming and crushing, the must undergoes fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve the delicate aromas.
Following fermentation, the wines are transferred to French oak barrels for aging. The estate uses a selection of toasting levels for each wine barrel. The aging process can last anywhere from 12 to 18 months, depending on the wine. The Domaine’s 2010 vintage is just over half Merlot (51%) with another 23% of Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah and Malbec make up the rest. Only 25% of the oak used on it is new.
