Speaking about the 2022 vintage in the cellars, Domaine JF Mugnier Assistant Winemaker, François Moriamez told us they had a vintage that was "..on a level between 2017 and 2009." In the beginning the vintage seemed destined for "massive concentration." However, in the end they wound up getting enough rain to prevent a drought influenced vintage which helped them retain balance in their wines and that is where the two comparison vintages come in. There's ripeness but not at the level of 2009 or 2018. Instead the acidities, despite being measurably quite close to recent vintages, provides a lift that draws the comparison to the 2017s.
A striking wine we enjoy year in and year out is Mugnier's Premier Cru Monopole "Clos de la Maréchale". At over 9ha, Clos de la Maréchale is the largest vineyard with one owner in the Côte d'Or (according to Mugnier's website). It's vines, planted in the 1910s and 1980, are positioned on a gentle east-facing slope. In front of a quarry, with which they must coordinate their harvest with, the vineyard sits on limestone-clay soils scattered pebbles, providing ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. Farming practices are sustainable, supporting both the vineyard’s heritage and health.
In the cellar, grapes are 100% de-stemmed and fermented for 15 to 20 days using ambient yeast in open wooden vats. The wine then ages for 18 months in barrels, of which 15% are new oak, with two rackings throughout the process. Following barrel aging, the wine is transferred in April to stainless steel tanks for an additional three months of refinement and is finally bottled in June or July, with careful SO2 additions before fermentation and bottling to ensure preservation and stability.
In line with the overall vintage at Mugnier we found this with expressive iron-like minerality, explosive berry flavors and vivid acidity. Like most of the wine that comes out of this address, the wines are simultaneously full of flavor and complexity while being almost featherweight, ethereal. They are sublime wines!
Burghound: 90-93 Points
This is the ripest wine in the range yet the dark berry fruit and earth-suffused nose remains nicely fresh. The succulent, round and caressing but punchy medium-bodied flavors deliver solid length on the mildly warm and rustic finale that is both firm and complex. Some patience will be necessary.
Wine Advocate: 91-93 Points
Aromas of dark berries, ripe cherries, spices and grilled meats introduce the 2022 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale, a medium to full-bodied, layered and youthfully structured wine with a deep core of fruit and chalky tannins that assert themselves gently on the finish.
