Alain Coudert’s Fleuries have captured our attention since we were introduced to them long ago. Alain’s wines are vibrant, complex, and rich to the degree that Gamay can be so without compromising their elegance. His property abuts Moulin-a-Vent so most of his vineyards share a similar makeup, granite and heavier in manganese and clay. A visit to his estate in Fleurie in early 2020 (just before the pandemic) reinforced our admiration and provided one of our favorite tasting experiences. After tasting the new releases, he pulled out a bottle from the cellar. It was from 1998. Back then, they didn’t separate their cuvée so the wine he pulled was known simply as the “Classique” if I remember correctly. It included a bit of what is now the Clos de la Roilette bottlings and parcels from what’s now this wine, the Cuvée Christie. The vineyards for this cuvée are located further within the Fleurie appellation so the profile is more along the lines of a ‘typical’ Fleurie ie more elegance. There is some element of tradition here. The wine is whole cluster fermented with a portion being semi-carbonic. Èlevage is in foudre. This particular cuvée is a favorite at chez nous because it has an intensity of flavor without any heaviness on the palate.
