98 Points Decanter:
This wine is superb, with mulberry and cassis fruit and abundant complexity from smoke, earth, spice, and mint notes. The aromas are forward, and the texture is supple and approachable, but there is substance and depth here that will continue to develop and evolve for decades. The texture is immense but lively, with freshness and a superb savoury saline undertone. The domaine owns nearly a hectare in the Clos de Bèze, with the majority of the vines more than a century old. This wine is one of the truly profound wines of Burgundy.(CC)
One of our favorite producers to visit in the Côte d'Or. "This is an exceptional wine even by the standards of this great vineyard and will repay significant ageing" (JM). 2/3 of the vines were planted in 1912 with the remainder planted in 1972.
Le Chambertin and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze together form the rectangular block of 28.3 hectares that is the jewel in Gevrey's crown. While Clos de Bèze may be called Chambertin (but not vice versa) this is a rarity. Still, they are such a pair that Jasper Morris describes them together in Inside Burgundy. With subtle differences in slope and levels and types of topsoil, Bèze ever-so-slightly distinguishes itself out of the gate as classy and more delicate with an exceptional perfume.
Neal Martin: 96-98 Points
The 2022 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a slightly deeper and more powerful bouquet than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Exquisite definition and focus—there are more oyster shell scents here. The medium-bodied palate has finely chiseled tannins, a little chalky in texture, building wonderfully to a saline, persistent finish that exudes real breeding. A noble wine in the making.
Wine Advocate: 94-96 Points
Aromas of cherries, red berries and plums mingle with rose petals, spices and bergamot to introduce the 2022 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, a medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy wine that's supple, suave and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, lively acids and sweet, melting tannins. Burghound: 93-96 Points
Note: two-thirds of the .98 ha parcel of vines was planted in 1912 and the remainder in 1973. Here too a discreet touch of wood is perceptible on the ripe aromas of pretty, even perfumed red berries that are mixed with pretty floral and spice wisps. The mouthfeel of the succulent, round and highly seductive large-bodied flavors is quite sleek as the supporting tannins are dense but fine on the lingering finish that exhibits excellent power and drive. This is very much built to repay extended keeping though it should be worth the wait. In short, this is potentially brilliant.*Burghound Don't Miss!*
