Alain Coudert is admits honestly, "The label is not so beautiful. But, it is a history of ours." Straddling the line between Moulin-A-Vent and Fleurie, Alain Coudert's nine hectares lie on one of the best slopes of all of the Beaujolais Crus. The Couderts feel that their particular terroir (mainly clay and manganese) and the age of their vines (30 to 80 years old) account for the richness and intensity of their wines. They are deeply colored, richly perfumed and seriously structured wines of relatively small production.
The horse on the label comes from the original owner of the property. Upset that his vineyards no longer belonged to the Moulin-A-Vent appellation, he angrily decided to name his wines after his racehorse named Roilette and forgo any mention of appellation or designate. The Couderts honor Roilette to this day, but they also proudly label their wines as from Fleurie.
According to Winemaker Alain Coudert, The "Cuvée Tardive" features older vines (70-80yr) than the Classique and offers a denser texture with sweeter tannins. Here, there is a larger intensity with ripe red cherries and a lovely sucrosity!
