Clau de Nell resides in Ambillou-Château, nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of Maine et Loire, lying between the charming cities of Angers and Saumur.
Situated at an elevation of 101 meters at its highest point, the estate encompasses 12 hectares of contiguous land. The winery, run by Anne-Claude Leflaive from 2008 until she passed in 2015 has been biodynamic since 2000. The property caught the attention of Anne-Claude Leflaive amidst significant financial struggles and a plea for assistance from the previous owners. In 2006, Anne-Claude and her husband, Christian Jacques, established a company aimed at supporting emerging biodynamic wine producers by leveraging their established commercial network built at Domaine Leflaive in Puligny-Montrachet. Moved by the plight of the struggling estate, they seized the opportunity in 2008 to acquire the domaine, which hadn’t produced a wine in three years due to financial constraints. This acquisition marked a fortuitous juncture for both the neglected vineyards and the Leflaive-Jacques family, further enhanced by the arrival of Sylvain Potin, a seasoned expert in biodynamic viticulture, as their estate manager.
Clau de Nell’s website suggests pairing this with pan seared chestnuts. Enjoy!
