Chartogne-Taillet's Champagnes have captivated us since our first sip of "Cuvée Saint Anne," a stunning example of richness balanced with vibrancy, freshness elevated by a subtle kiss of barrel aging. When we had the chance to showcase a unique new bottling from Alexandre Chartogne, we couldn’t resist.
Known for crafting single-parcel Champagnes that express the nuances of his family’s historic terroirs in Merfy, near Reims, Alexandre has built his reputation on meticulous study and experimentation. Each of his wines celebrates the individuality of its plot, underscored by energy, finesse, and a profound sense of place.
This release, however, represents an exciting divergence. For "Hors Série" (Special Edition), Alexandre steps beyond Merfy to the grand cru villages of Avize and Oger in the Côte des Blancs. Here, he blends Chardonnay from two old-vine plots planted between 1927 and 1986 on porous chalk soils. The result is a Champagne of extraordinary depth, shaped by a long native fermentation, nine months in old barrels, and 40 months of aging in bottle. With just 2,200 bottles produced, this is a rare opportunity to experience Alexandre’s vision through a different lens.
