Birichino Winery was founded in 2008 by Alex Krause and John Locke. The two friends met while working at Bonny Doon Vineyard in Santa Cruz, California. They shared a passion for winemaking and a desire to create wines that were expressive of their unique terroir.
Birichino is named after the Italian word for "mischievous." The name reflects the winery's playful approach to winemaking. Krause and Locke are not afraid to experiment with different grape varieties and winemaking techniques. They are also committed to using sustainable farming practices. And while they might be quite mischievous, their ‘normal’ bottlings are made from grapes like Malvasia (still and sparkling), Muscat Canelli, Chenin Blanc, and Grenache making their Cabernet Sauvignon the outlier. In fact, they only make about 5 barrels of the wine each year. Their vineyard is adjacent to the famed Monte Bello estate of Ridge. The vines planted here were taken from cuttings from Chateau Margaux back in the 1880s.
