Côtes du Rhône have always been a source of value especially in the prolific southern Rhône Valley. What we tasted today stood out not only for its affordability but also its quality. Crafted from a traditional southern Rhône blend of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 5% Cinsault, and 5% Carignan, the grapes hail from three estate vineyards near the communes of Orange (Sainte Cardille) and Saint Laurent des Arbres in Lirac (Gissac & Le Clau).
The vines, aged between 40 and 70 years, planted on sandy soils rich in quartz, lend depth and complexity to this offering. The Sabon family harvests this Côtes du Rhône meticulously. After, the grapes are de-stemmed and undergo fermentation with indigenous yeasts in cement tanks, followed by aging in a thoughtful combination of cement, older foudre, acacia wood barrel, and older French oak barrel. In other words, from a quality/profile standpoint, we might as well be talking about Châteauneuf du Pape .
Now, let's talk about the price— this wine typically commands over $24 per bottle (current U.S. low is $26.99/btl), but here's where it gets interesting. For a limited time, we're offering it at a discounted rate of $22.96 per bottle. However, for the true enthusiasts or those seeking provisions for spontaneity, an even more enticing offer awaits: a mere $20 per bottle when purchased as part of a case of 12 or more.
As for the tasting impressions, the wine unfolds with aromas of garrigue, cherries, and blackberries, complemented by subtle hints of fennel frond. Its moderate tannins deliver a mouth-filling experience and speak to the age of the vines and seriousness of the viticulture and vinification. Showcasing flavors of raspberries, black cherries the palate offers a long finish.
