Burgundy is widely recognized as one of the most renowned wine regions in the world. Its reputation is largely due to the unique soil composition found there. As I am fond of saying, buying Burgundy is a lot like buying property. Most of its value or uniqueness is derived from its location, the more specific, the better. In this case, buying a Gevrey-Chambertin is a lot like settling into a specific neighborhood in the city.
Burgundy's vineyards are planted in a mix of limestone, clay, and marl soils, with limestone being the dominant component. Like in Oregon these limestone soils are particularly well-suited for growing the Pinot Noir. One of the most notable characteristics of Burgundy's limestone soils is the unique minerality they impart to the wines. This minerality is often described as flinty, stony, or chalky and is thought to arise from the interaction between the soil and the roots of the vines. The calcium-rich soil is believed to provide a "backbone" to the wine, lending it structure and depth. In Gevrey-Chambertin one tends to encounter brown limestone.
