"You don't know anyting about Volnay if you haven't tasted Cailleret." Benjamin told us while tasting the 2016s from barrel. While the best vineyards in Volnay have been (and always will be) a point of contention, the one that always seems to always be included in the best of list is Caillerets. The best wines from this vineyard combine unmatched weight and finesse.
Benjamin Leroux’s wines are always exactingly made. No detail is overlooked in the vineyard, the cellar or, in a tasting. Ben insists on Zalto stems for tastings so though you spend a good portion of the time fretting that you will inevitably break your glass, you manage to hold on to at least some of Benjamin’s wisdom and insight. Though Ben only makes wine from a total of about 3.5ha of vineyards he has an impressive breadth with over 57* appelations from which we get to select. Top flight Grand Crus and 1er Crus are always excellent with Ben’s touch and his village and regional wines are some of Burgundy’s best. There is no desire to show off with excessive manipulation. Benjamin clearly captures each site’s unique characters with aplomb. As he's told us in his cellar "I fail when I have to add somethign in the wine. The less you do the better it is."
